The paths of yoga

“Learning with Taryn is a joy. She makes the subject matter fun and relevant whilst ensuring that each learner has opportunities to ask questions and voice their opinion. I love the encouragement to feel as well as understand.”

The current yoga climate is one marked by discernment

Collectively, we are zooming out and asking the hard questions around access and inclusivity. Individually, we are considering how best we can offer and imbibe in a practice whose roots may not be connected to us by geography or creed. To connect to your yoga in the present necessitates looking back to its roots. Yoga lands in our bodies as both a state (to be experienced) and a methodology (steps to follow.) If we are to frame yoga as a ‘method’, what is it a recipe towards? Do you own that answer, or does the tradition?

I have designed this course with the intention of providing yoga teachers and practitioners the context and perspective in order to see and engage in their yoga with more clarity and, ultimately, more compassion. This course will provide an intellectual and experiential introduction to each of the five paths of yoga: Jñana, Karma, Bhakti, Raja and Hatha.

This course offers:

  • an exploration of yoga’s primary sources to uncover the vocabulary and tenets of each path

  • a ‘yoga thesis template’ to distill your knowledge and use as a comparative tool

  • opportunities for critical thinking and group discussion, with specific framing and acknowledgement of anti-oppression and anti-racism within the current yoga landscape

  • an introduction to the story of the Bhagavad Gita (which houses 4 of the 5 paths in its brilliant words)

  • an experience beyond the intellect through a guided meditation (yoga nidra) that embodies the themes we’ve learned, allowing for integration of the material on a deeper level

  • a starting place & the resources for continuing your own studies after this course

OVER TEN SESSIONS

Each week we will toggle between the intellect and the heart. For each path we spend an hour on theory and an hour to engage with the material through discussion and practice.
